I am writing this from the apartment I started in. The same one. The same walls, the same stomping upstairs, the same view from the window. I left, and the leaving broke me open in ways I was not ready for, and then I came back.
That is the short version. The long version has roaches and hundred-degree heat and a grief I had been holding at arm's length since April.
The move was supposed to be simple. Same complex, different unit. I packed over three weeks. I was ready.
The new unit was not.
It smelled like someone else's bad habits soaked into the drywall. Then there was a baby roach. One baby roach means a breeding population, not a scout. I know this. My body knew it before my brain finished the sentence, because my skin was already crawling.
I asked for a transfer. Management offered a bigger unit somewhere else at a price I could not afford. I asked for the same rate. They said no.
So I came back.
Three moves in five days. Out of the old apartment. Into the new one. Back to the old one. In July heat that made the air feel like breathing through a wet cloth. My partner carried furniture while narrating his own effort in ways that landed wrong, then apologized, then carried more furniture. My stepfather showed up a day late. My brother showed up and helped without commentary.
On the second night, hauling boxes back across the parking lot in the dark, I cried.
That does not sound like news. But it was.
I had not cried since my grandfather's funeral in April.
Neil
His name was Neil. He did a stretch-and-yell every morning to make me laugh. He had an old man laugh that could fill a garage. He listened to Jim Croce and CCR and smelled like woodsmoke and engine grease.
He had project cars. He fed cows. He watched the wood stove with me. We did sock races. We played war. He drove me around on the golf cart and let me believe I was steering.
He had a handwritten chili recipe where the line for servings says a lot.
That is Neil in two words.
I found out he was dying thirdhand, through a cousin, because my mother had been giving me the silent treatment over a boundary I had set in March. I drove ten hours overnight with my partner and my dog. I sat with him for four hours while he was unconscious. He died. One last breath out and then nothing. No shift in the room. No energy change. He turned gray.
The hospice photo is still the default image in my head. I have been trying to replace it with the man who smelled like woodsmoke and yelled every morning just to hear me laugh.
The night I cried in the parking lot, hauling boxes, was the first time the seal cracked. Later that night I talked to my partner about Neil. Not the death. The good memories. The stretch-and-yell. The chili recipe. The garage.
It was the first time I had spoken about who he was out loud since April.
I have a grief ritual built for him. Candle for Hekate. Woodsmoke incense. An older photo, not the hospice one. Jim Croce first, then CCR. Speaking the never-agains out loud, one by one, as individual sentences. Separating the family wound from the grief for the man himself, on separate paper, physically set aside. Burning the never-agains. Space for whatever comes through.
It is waiting for uninterrupted quiet time.
It is patient with me.
The Full Moon
On June 29th, the night of the full moon, everything was packed or lost or in the wrong apartment. I had a single candle and my body. That was the entire altar.
Seven words came through fast, like water over rocks.
Moon. Water. Dragon. Whisp. Heart. Bee. Egg.
Then a second transmission, quieter: Friday. Moonlight. 15. 17. New.
Fifteen is Veil in my alphabet of desire. Seventeen is Fracture.
Friday was July 3rd. The day I returned the keys to the unit that did not work out. The last thread cut.
I did not know that yet when I received the numbers. I did not know the keys would go back on that date. The channel knew before I did.
The physical confirmation came in sequence: right foot sole, then both palms, then the third eye. A circuit. A body saying yes, this is real, I recognize this frequency.
The dominant symbol was the Egg. Something internal. Gestating. Requiring brooding — not passive rest, but active warm patience. The egg knows when to hatch. I do not get to decide for it.
The Water Spoke My Language
July 4th. Dark bowl. Black candle. Mugwort smoke on a metal incense insert. Headphones with ambient sound.
My intuition said do not turn the lights off.
I listened. The scry worked in full daylight.
I saw a clock. The hands pointed to approximately 9:45.
In my alphabet of desire, nine is Rot. Forty-five is Unbind. The water showed me a clock and the clock spoke my own symbolic language — a system of forty-six sigils that I built from nothing, that exists nowhere else on earth, that no one else could have decoded.
It was my first scry. Ever.
My right foot tingled. My heart pounded. My body was afraid in the way that means this is real rather than this is dangerous.
The follow-up cards confirmed it. The Page of Pentacles — the student, the beginner — is composting. The Magician is being unbound. What was always there, tied down, is being released.
At 9:45 that night, I was not performing magic. I was fully present in my body, being human, with my partner. The exact hour the water named. Circe's second lesson: emotional openness, received before acted on, shared with others instead of held in solitude.
The water did not care that it was my first time. It did not wait for me to be ready. It spoke, and it spoke in my own alphabet, and my body recognized the signal before my mind caught up.
Two Decks, Two Teachers
Somewhere in the middle of all this, I interviewed the Holloway deck. Nine cards. Mostly reversals.
The Holloway is a moonlight trickster-liberator. It works in the dark. It teaches through emotional flooding, not composure. It forces decisions, frees from cages (maybe too fast), operates with strategic withholding, and exists to break chains. Its closing message was the Devil reversed: break the chains.
The Meraki is the shadow mirror. Justice. Hard truths. Formal spreads. Sit-with-it energy.
They are in direct conversation about the same wounds from opposite angles. The Meraki holds the mirror steady. The Holloway smashes it and hands you a shard and says this one — look at this one.
I trust them both. They do not do the same job.
The Jars, The Herbs, The Floor That Needs Washing
I built two spell jars on July 5th and saved a third.
The first: salt, hyssop, rosemary, lavender. Sealed with black wax. Reset. Purification and protection for this apartment that I did not choose to come back to but came back to anyway.
The second: salt, rosemary, hyssop, mugwort, lavender. Sealed with green wax. Threshold for what is next.
The third is waiting for jasmine to finish drying. Dream work. Divination. Sight.
The hyssop floor wash is still pending. A pot, water, hyssop, and a rag. Twenty minutes. The most practical thing I could do for this apartment's energy, and I keep not doing it, which is probably its own kind of message.
The Pattern Named
There was a night this week where I told my partner something true.
I said the real thing. Then I took it back in the same breath. Told him to do what made him happy. Told him I was fine.
He left the room. I lay there knowing I had done it again. Said the honest thing and then buried it alive before anyone had to respond to it.
The shadow work uncovered this: lifelong self-concealment. The belief that being truly seen would cost everything. And here it was, not in a journal or a tarot spread, but in my actual bed, in real time, with a real person.
I dreamed about a two-headed foal that night. Newborn. Both heads had to be killed. Not one. Both. The feeling was duty — awful but necessary.
The two heads are the honest voice and the performed voice fused onto one body. The dream says the whole split pattern has to die so something single-headed and real can be born.
I know what needs to happen. I am not there yet.
That is allowed.
Circe Burns Fast
I lit candles for Circe and Hekate on a night the cards told me to play instead of work.
Circe's candle burned hot, burned messy, threw wax everywhere, and snuffed itself out the moment it was done. On-brand. Her whole energy in my practice has been begin badly, begin messy, just begin. Fast and decisive.
Her wax drippings looked like a mountain range. Purple wax. Two pieces. Not one unified shape — a conversation, or a before and after, or transformation caught mid-process.
Hekate's candle burned high but slow. She was not going anywhere. She did not need to prove she was there.
Two flames, two speeds, two styles. The same night, the same altar, the same witch sitting between them.
Where I Am Now
I am back in the apartment I started in. The stomping neighbors are still there. The sour jar is still working. The altar is rebuilt — silver engraved tray, white hawk for Circe, black wolf for Hekate, feathers, quartz, spell jars, the whole small kingdom of objects that mean more to me than furniture.
The Magician keeps showing up in every reading. Upright, insistent, louder each time.
The Page of Pentacles is composting.
Hekate used her serious voice — three reversed court cards — to tell me to stop pulling and start being. The fae asked for space and patience. The grief ritual is built and waiting. The egg is warm.
I was hired as a writer for a community I have poured into for months. My words got me the job. That happened and I almost did not mention it because victory laps are not something I know how to take yet.
But the Six of Wands is learning to turn upright.
I can feel it.

Aftercare: water, food, warmth, partner or dog nearby.
For What Broke Open
The apartment did not change.
I did.
The walls are the same. The stomping is the same.
The woman inside them is not.
She has cried for her grandfather.
She has spoken Latin at a river and been answered.
She has scryed in daylight and heard her own alphabet in the water.
She has said the true thing to the person beside her in bed
and watched herself bury it alive
and named the burial
and not yet stopped doing it
and not yet given up.
The egg is warm.
The Magician is loud.
The Page is composting.
The veil has fractured.
Something is becoming visible in me
that I did not plant
and cannot rush
and will not hide from anymore.
